Are you struggling to find a line that fits you?

We’ve got just the thing.

Order your line

To order your line, we will need one of the following. Hand us any one, and we’ll turn it into every other form of the same line.

How we get the right line every time

Equation to graph

y = 2x + 1

We start at the point (0, 1), and then draw a line with a slope of 21: up 2, over 1.

2 points to equation

Say your points are (5, 2) and (3, −1).

  1. We calculate the slope: 32
  2. That gives us y = 32x + b
  3. We plug in one of the points, like (5, 2), and find that b = −5.5

That gives us our equation:

y = 32x − 5.5

Graph or table to equation

For a graph or a table, we find 2 points and use the method above.

Scenario to equation

Susan starts out with $10 in her bank account, and she earns $20 every week.

  1. We let x be the number of weeks and y be the money in her account.
  2. She earns $20 every week, so the rate of change is the slope: m = 20
  3. She starts with $10, so that’s where the line begins when x = 0: b = 10

That gives us our equation:

y = 20x + 10

Slope and a point to equation

Say your slope is 2 and your point is (7, 8).

  1. We put the slope into y = mx + b, which gives us y = 2x + b
  2. We plug in the point (7, 8): 8 = 2(7) + b
  3. We multiply: 8 = 14 + b
  4. We subtract 14 from both sides and find that b = −6

That gives us our equation:

y = 2x − 6
